About this Page:

This page has the current NATO military map marking symbols made up as TrueType Fonts, for download. It also contains the complete APP-6 Manual, and some applications to make MapSymbs more useful.

You need a PC running any version of Windows from 3.1 or later, and later model Apple Macs. The total size of the MapSymbs package is about 2.91Mb and takes the form of a self-extracting ZIP file. To view some of the supporting documents you will require MS Word, PowerPoint and Excel. MAC Users: These fonts can easily be converted for use on a Macintosh with a utility such as TTConverter (Thanks to George for that one)(only required for older Mac OS versions).

I have provided the download as a single self-extracting Zip file. This download contains the latest embeddable version of the Old APP-6 MapSymbs, explanatory Help-Files, additional example files, and is backwards-compatible with all previous versions.

User requested additional symbols that are under development are available below. E-mail me if you want a symbol that is not in the pack above and I will think about adding it to this font. Symbols that are especially popular (or doctrinally necessary) will be incorporated into the main pack at a later stage. To download the user requested symbols, click on the link below:

Just the APP-6 Fonts. This file has all the fonts in a ZIP file, with no installation program, sample files, or anything else. Some users reported problems with the installer, so this allows you to download the fonts, upzip them into a folder. Then select all the fonts, right click and select "Install for all users".

NATO APP-6 Manual. This is the complete NATO APP-6 manual in Adobe Acrobat format (zipped).
MS Applications. These are Templates with test macros for MS Word and MS PowerPoint to make the use of the symbols easier.

The following application is designed to let you preview and pick characters easily from specified fonts, such as MS Wingdings; but make using my MapSymbs fonts MUCH easier to use: Character Map Pro a freeware product from PhotoshopClub.com

Soviet Map Marking Symbols. Below is a rough guide to "Soviet Map Marking". This symbology was used by the former Soviet Union and its Allies. It is now obsolete as most Former Warsaw Pact nations now use the NATO App-6 or App-6a symbols.
